Thai troops tighten border security as Cambodian villagers protest over barbed wire 'annexation'
Thai troops tightened border security as Cambodian villagers slammed the alleged encroachment on disputed territory.
Thailand's First Army Area installed barbed wires and tyre barricades, claiming it would enhance security near a border village in Sa Kaeo province.
However, the move enraged Cambodian residents, who staged mass protests over the alleged annexation on August 17. The territorial dispute dates to the Franco-Siamese Treaty of 1907, in which land was carved up.
Footage shows villagers, including monks, children, and the elderly, gathered near the wire fence. The group were said to have hurled insults and curses at Thai soldiers observing them from behind a black cloth wall.
Thai forces continued setting up spools of concertina wire and poles equipped with CCTV cameras along a six-mile stretch of the border.
Major General Winthai Suvaree, spokesman for the Royal Thai Army, said on Monday that the disputed area lies 'entirely within Thailand's jurisdiction', citing the village's relative location to two boundary markers along the frontier.
He said: 'The barbed wire fences are not meant to mark national borders, but to act as temporary barriers to protect Thai personnel. They are intended to prevent incursions and the potential use of landmines against our forces.'
Thai acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai said there were no plans to evict Cambodian citizens from settlements in Thai territory 'for now'.
A bloody military confrontation flared in long-disputed border areas as Thailand and Cambodia accused each other of instigating the violence on July 24.
Cambodia retaliated by firing rockets into neighbouring Surin and Sisaket provinces.
Officials said dozens of people have been killed and more than 300,000 displaced on both sides of the territory.
Both sides have reached a shaky truce following talks facilitated by President Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Negotiations are set to continue at the Thai-Cambodian Regional Border Committee meeting on August 27.
