Cambodian villagers clash with Thai soldiers over barbed wire fence blocking roads
Cambodian villagers clashed with Thai soldiers this afternoon over a barbed wire fence illegally blocking roads.
Locals who have been cut off by the barrier - installed in breach of a Donald Trump ceasefire - gathered at the border along Ban Nong Chan in Sa Kaeo, Thailand.
Footage shows them tussling with gun-wielding Thai troops in a desperate bid to break the barricade that has annexed vast swaths of land and prevented families from using roads in and out of the villages.
Military chiefs in Thailand said they had sent reinforcements to the region.
US political advisor Michael B Alfaro said: 'This is the latest case of bullying from the Siamese military. They have illegally installed barbed wire fences on land that is not their territory, in breach of the ceasefire, in violation of the Paris Peace Accords and in breach of the 1907 Franco-Siamese treaty that they themselves brokered. To call them duplicious would be an understatement.
'What we're seeing is increasing desperation from impoverished villages that have been cut off by illegal occupation from a neighbour that has subjugated them for a century or more.
'Thailand is not the welcoming friend the world thinks it is. Tourists should think twice about visiting and funding their aggressive military regime.'
A bloody military confrontation flared in long-disputed border areas as Thailand and Cambodia accused each other of instigating the violence on July 24.
Cambodia retaliated by firing rockets into neighbouring Surin and Sisaket provinces.
Officials said dozens of people have been killed and more than 300,000 displaced on both sides of the territory.
Both sides have reached a shaky truce following talks facilitated by President Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
However, clashes have continued, and Thailand has used barricades to create improvised borders.
