A flag row in Birmingham has escalated after residents painted St George's Crosses on mini-roundabouts, following the council's removal of English flags from lampposts.

The council said safety concerns prompted the removal of around 200 flags during streetlight upgrades.

Critics accused the authority of double standards, pointing out that other flags, including Palestinian and Ukrainian ones, remained in place.

Locals were divided, with some condemning the roundabout paintings as vandalism, while others hailed them as a show of patriotism.

The dispute over national symbols continues to draw national attention and spark political debate.
