From the 15th to the 19th century, millions of Africans were forcibly taken from their homelands and shipped to the Americas through the island, located off Dakar. In 1791, enslaved Africans in Santo Domingo, now Haiti and the Dominican Republic, rose against French rule, a struggle that led to the founding of Haiti as the first state to abolish slavery. To honor this historic turning point, UNESCO declared Aug. 23 the "International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition" in 1998 and the first commemoration was held in Haiti, followed by one on Goree Island a year later. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978, Goree Island is preserved as a lasting reminder of slavery’s enduring impact on human history.
