Hong Kong: Hong Kong holds landmark security trial for jailed media tycoon Jimmy Lai
HONG KONG, CHINA - AUG. 28, 2025: Hong Kong on Thursday, Aug. 28, began the landmark trial of imprisoned media tycoon Jimmy Lai under the city’s national security law, a case drawing international attention over its implications for press freedom and civil liberties. Police maintained a heavy presence and carried out security checks outside the West Kowloon Law Courts Building. Facing allegations of colluding with foreign forces and publishing seditious material, Lai, 77, pleaded not guilty to all counts, which are punishable by life in prison. His trial began Dec. 18, 2023, after his arrest in December 2020.
