A mariner was exhilarated as he rode alongside dolphins at the front of a ship.

Nino Lito Canizares watched the sea creatures glide in front of the bulbous bow of the vessel in the Celebes Sea off the coast of General Santos, the Philippines.

Footage shows the cetaceans leaping and swimming inches away from the ship, prompting the entertained crew to gasp at the scene on August 12.

Nino said: 'It's so special seeing dolphins in their natural habitat. This is one of the beautiful things about working at sea.'

Dolphins often swim near ships to ride the bow waves created by the vessel. This behaviour, called bow riding and this allows them to conserve energy while moving quickly through the water.
