Dennis Wynne, daughter of Dennis Morley, a survivor of the Lisbon Maru sinking, has recently shared a little-known story from World War II when a group of Chinese fishermen risked their lives to rescue more than 300 British prisoners of war (POWs) under Japanese gunfire. In October 1942, the Japanese army requisitioned a cargo vessel "Lisbon Maru" to carry more than 1,800 British POWs from Hong Kong to Japan. In violation of international conventions, the Japanese army did not put any markings on the ship to indicate the POWs inside. Torpedoed by the U.S. army, the vessel sank in the waters off the Zhoushan Islands in east China's Zhejiang Province. Local fishermen risked their own lives to rescue 384 POWs aboard the ship. One of the survivors was Dennis Morley, a member of the British Royal Scots Regiment. Morley survived the sinking of the ship by floating on his back in the water. He was eventually recaptured by another Japanese ship. Wynne said the intervention of Chinese fishermen was key to his survival. Before he died at the age of 101, Morley told his daughter that he dreamed of a memorial being built in China, to recognize the bravery of the rescuers. After his death, Wynne wrote to Chinese President Xi Jinping, asking if a monument could be erected in Zhoushan. President Xi said in the letter he would personally look into the building of the memorial. In May this year, that promise was fulfilled with the unveiling of a commemorative monument in Zhoushan, attended by Wynne, relatives of other British POWs, and descendants of the heroic Chinese fishermen. The new memorial stands as a sister site to the existing Lisbon Maru memorial at the UK's National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, which honors more than 800 British POWs who lost their lives in the sinking of the ship. As the world marks eight decades since the end of World War II, the legacy of the Lisbon Maru rescue lives on -- a testament to survival, courage, and the unbreakable bond between Chinese and British people.
