Crystal River, United States - August 31, 2025 On Tuesday, wildlife authorities from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge Complex teamed up with ZooTampa at Lowry Park to return Arthur (RNW2405), an adult male manatee, to his natural habitat. Arthur had been rescued in January 2024 after suffering from cold stress, a dangerous condition that occurs when water temperatures fall below 68°F. Under the care of ZooTampa staff, he regained his strength and grew significantly before being released. At the time of rescue, Arthur weighed 661 pounds and measured 8.8 feet. By his release, he had grown to 910 pounds and 9.5 feet, demonstrating a remarkable recovery. Unlike dolphins and whales, manatees lack a thick layer of blubber to retain heat. This makes them reliant on natural springs and warm-water refuges during colder months to survive. Arthur’s successful return highlights the ongoing efforts of wildlife organizations to protect and rehabilitate endangered species in Florida.
