HEAD OF MISSING PERSONS INSTITUTE'S DIRECTORS' NIKOLA PERISICS SPEAKING AT PRESS CONFERENCESARAJEVO, BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA - SEPTEMBER 03: 7,580 people went missing and were never heard from again during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina between 1992 and 1995, when Serbs attacked Bosniaks, The Bosnia and Herzegovina Missing Persons Institute announced at press conference on Wednesday (September 3). The work carried out on persons missing in the Bosnian War was presented at a press conference held to mark the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Institute for Missing Persons. Speaking at the conference, Bosnia and Herzegovina Minister of Human Rights and Refugees Sevlid Hurtic said they wanted to complete the process regarding missing persons within 2-3 years. Nikola Perisic, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Missing Persons Institute, also stated that the institution was doing good work in searching for missing persons throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina. Perisic stated that the institute continues its mission by returning the remains of the missing to their families without any ethnic, national, racial, gender, social, or other discrimination, adding, "There are still 7,580 people missing. Most of these are the most difficult cases because the perpetrators tried to cover their tracks. The passage of time, the deaths of witnesses and close relatives, have made our work more difficult in this process." At the meeting, those who know the locations of mass graves were also asked to report this to the authorities. In July 1995, Bosnian Serb forces attacked the UN-declared safe area of Srebrenica, killing more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys despite the presence of Dutch peacekeepers. The forces led by Gen. Ratko Mladic, who was later sentenced to life for war crimes and genocide, overran the area on July 11, executing around 2,000 men and boys that day and thousands more in the following days as they fled into nearby forests. The bodies of victims have been found in 570 mass graves across Bosnia and Herzegovina.
