Lisbon funicular crash leaves at least 16 dead as Portugal declares day of mourning
A tragic accident struck Lisbon when the iconic Gloria funicular derailed in the city centre and crashed into a residential building on September 3.
Authorities confirmed at least 16 people killed and more than 25 others injured, including five in critical condition.
Lisbon’s mayor, Carlos Moedas, called it “a tragic day for our city” and announced a three-day period of mourning in Lisbon, while the government declared one day of national mourning.
Emergency services remain on site as investigations continue into the cause of the derailment.
