A horrifying bus crash in Guatemala left 55 people dead.

The vehicle crashed in Calzada La Paz, near Puente Belice in Zone 6, during the early hours of Monday, February 10.

Eyewitnesses said the bus struck two cars before hitting the guardrail and falling 115ft (35m) into a sewage-polluted stream, landing upside down with its body half-submerged.

Footage shows the emergency crews at the scene during the retrieval operation.

Police confirmed the vehicle was carrying around 70 individuals, including students, commuters, and individuals travelling to the capital for medical appointments.

Moises Ortiz, a spokesman for the public prosecutor's office, told local media: 'So far, 53 people have died at the scene.'

Two victims who were rescued alive later died in the hospital.

Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo declared three days of national mourning for the victims, and an investigation into the incident has been launched.
