Storyline: Chinese companies rearrange shipping to US after new tariff extension [Voice_over] Chinese shipping companies are rearranging their routes and schedules once again, after the U.S. delayed for another 90 days its threat of stiff tariffs on Chinese imports. In May, tariffs between the two countries were paused for a 90-day window, which prompted an initial surge in shipping prices as companies rushed to complete orders before the deadline. But now, with the tariff window being extended for another 90 days, shipping prices are falling. Official data shows that since June 6th, the shipping price from Shanghai to the eastern U.S. dropped from about 7,000 U.S. dollars per forty-foot equivalent unit, or FEU, to about 2,600 per FEU, a more than 50 percent decrease. As a result, some firms have been forced to reduce or optimize their shipping capacities. Data shows that the Yangshan Border Inspection Station in Shanghai handled over 90 ships from U.S. routes in July. The latest 90-day tariff extension was signed by Chinese and American officials on Aug 12 during a meeting in Stockholm and is set to expire on November 10th.
