Istanbul, Türkiye - September 07, 2025 Protests erupted in Istanbul on Sunday as supporters of Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) clashed with police following the removal of the party’s leadership. The opposition accused President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s government of staging a “political coup” after the CHP management was dismissed and control handed to a temporary council. Demonstrators attempted to break through the security cordon despite a citywide ban on rallies in six districts, including central areas. Police used force to disperse the crowds, and scuffles broke out.
