Superfit gran, 87, hangs up her racing shoes after running her last 10km race
A super-fit gran is hanging up her racing shoes after completing her final 10k - aged 87.
Barbara Thackray only started running 10 years ago but has since raised tens of thousands of pounds for charity and became the face of an Adidas advert alongside Mo Salah.
The sprightly OAP raises funds for St Ann's Hospice, where her sister Audrey was cared for before passing away from cancer in 1988, aged just 55.
The incredible grandmother-of-two has competed in around 15 official 10km races - but has still been running regularly to keep herself fit.
It is estimated she has covered more than 7,000km (4,300 miles) since taking up the hobby in 2015.
Barbara, a retired teacher and college lecturer, from Altrincham, Greater Manchester, ran 10km twice a week for five years.
She reduced that to just one 10km run a week earlier this year - when she made the decision that Sunday's Altrincham 10k would be her last official running event.
Over her 10-year running journey she has clocked thousands of miles and raised over £35,000 for St Anne's Hospice.
Barbara said: "The race went well but this will be my last official race."
"I think my time was about one hour and 40 minutes - there were something like 3,800 runners and I was the oldest."
"But I'm always the oldest runner, and normally the only one in my age bracket!"
"My body is getting a bit tired now - I'll keep running, but no more races."
Barbara's sister, Audrey Humphreys, died in 1988 aged just 55 after developing lung cancer which spread to her bones.
Audrey spent her last few weeks in St Ann's Hospice and Barbara recalled their care was "just marvellous"."
Around 2015, she trained and ran her first 10km race for charity, with some other family members - and caught the running bug.
She continued her running, completing countless more races - each time for the same charity.
She is estimated to have covered over 7,000km and always runs alongside Audrey's son John Humphreys, 65, in her honour.
She said: "When we did the first 10k, my nephew signed me up for the next year."
"I thought, if I'm going to run next year, I've got to be running!"
"I was running a 10k a week until covid came, then I upped it to two 10ks a week and carried on."
"It was only March this year I went back to running one 10k a week again."
After today's triumph, which alone brought in over £5,000 of donations, she can hang up her racing shoes with pride.
She said: "Crossing the finish line, I was getting a bit tired."
"But there were lots of people around me including my family and friends."
"I'm thrilled and pleased that everyone has been so generous donating."
"I'm pleased it's done and I crossed the finish line."
