China: China to accelerate application of AI in manufacturing: official
Storyline: China will unveil policies to push forward the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and manufacturing to advance industrial transformation and technological breakthroughs, said deputy minister of Industry and Information Technology on Tuesday. Zhang Yunming, vice minister of Industry and Information Technology, elaborated on relevant progress at a press conference in Beijing on promoting new industrialization during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025). Zhang said the State Council recently issued opinions on the implementation of an “AI+Action" plan, proposing to accelerate the application of AI in different links of manufacturing. "We will study and formulate an implementation plan for the 'AI + Manufacturing' special action, deploying intelligent transformation tasks for key industries, key links, and key areas. We will make a road map for 'AI + Manufacturing' transformation, and issue a guide for AI applications in manufacturing enterprises. We will cultivate a group of service providers for AI application, to create an 'one-stop toolbox' for model tuning, data governance, and security assurance. We will also regularly conduct 'in-depth inspections' on AI empowering new industrialization to promote precise matching of supply and demand," Zhang said. Zhang stressed that for the key task of achieving new industrialization, developing AI is a must rather than an option. "The ministry will push for technological breakthroughs of high-end computing chips, industrial multimodal algorithms, among others. We will accelerate the creation of high-quality data sets, promote the development and deployment of intelligent entities, and develop AI terminal products such as humanoid robots and brain-computer interfaces. We will also promote the development of basic standards, general standards, and enabling application standards through tiered and classified approaches," he said.
