WIDE SHOT OF SHORE OF LAKE VAN AND SURROUNDING FIELDSVAN, TÜRKİYE - SEPT. 8: Once a busy resting place for migrating flamingos, the shores of Lake Van in eastern Türkiye are now struggling with falling water levels. Several years of low rainfall and high heat have caused the lake to shrink, with the shoreline in some shallow areas pulling back by hundreds of meters. As a result, flamingos now gather in smaller, deeper spots along the edge instead of large groups near the shore. As the wetlands dry out and turn into land, cattle now graze where the birds once lived. Experts warn that the continued decline in Lake Van’s water levels poses a growing threat to the region’s biodiversity. Türkiye’s Lake Van, serve as a vital sanctuary for a wide variety of migrating bird species each year. The flamingos typically reside in the Van Lake and surrounding natural reservoirs until the end of November before heading to warmer African regions in early fall.
