LEMONT, ILLINOIS, US - SEPTEMBER 11, 2025: Mourners laid flowers and lit candles in a vigil outside the Turning Point USA Legacy Center on Thursday, Sept. 11, in Lemont, the organization's original headquarters established in 2012 by founder Charlie Kirk, one day after the conservative activist was fatally shot at an event in Utah.
Kirk, who grew up in nearby suburbs and built TPUSA into a powerhouse for young conservatives, is remembered by locals as a tireless force in American politics.
Kirk, 31, was fatally shot Wednesday while addressing a group of students at Utah Valley University in the city of Orem, some 40 miles (64.4 kilometers) south of Salt Lake City. The apparent targeted attack occurred despite security, including six university police officers and Kirk's private team.
Online videos captured the moment a bullet struck Kirk as he spoke, sending students fleeing in panic. He was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead hours later.
