SOFIA, BULGARIA - SEPT. 13: Demonstrators in Bulgaria's capital, Sofia protested against the country’s decision to adopt the euro at the beginning of 2026.
Participants in the demonstration organized by the anti-European Union and pro-Russia Vazrazhdane (Revival) Party carried signs reading “Protect the Bulgarian lev,” “No to the euro,” and “Resign, government.”
Vazrazhdane leader Kostadin Kostadinov joined thousands of people in front of the Bulgarian National Bank for the protest.
Speaking at the demonstration, Kostadinov recalled that the parliament, which decided to switch the country’s national currency from the lev to the euro, had refused to put the decision to a referendum, and he demanded the government’s resignation.
Claiming that the Eurozone is collapsing, Kostadinov said, that the resignation of the government is necessary to protect Bulgaria and the Bulgarian lev.
He added, that France, the Eurozone’s second-largest economy, is technically bankrupt. Germany is experiencing a recession, while Italy is facing both recession and inflation simultaneously. The first, second, and third largest economies of the Eurozone are collapsing right before their eyes and they are boarding the Titanic.
Kostadinov announced that they will hold another protest on Sept. 18, saying that it aims at bringing down the government and this protest is only the beginning of the process.
Securty forces took extensive security measures, and the demonstration ended with a march in the city center.
