China: China's major ports go smarter, greener
Storyline: China's major ports go smarter, greener [Voice_over] New information shows that the ports in some of China's major cities have been continuing to optimize their operations this year with smart port technology and sustainable systems. According to the Ministry of Natural Resources, China has built 23 automated container terminals, 29 automated dry bulk terminals, and has rolled out at large-scale the use of 5G technology and unmanned container trucks. At the Qingdao Port in east China's Shandong Province, for example, battery swap and LNG refueling stations have facilitated the port's use of green energy vehicles on all its high-frequency, short-haul trips. [Sound_bite] Qi Bin, Deputy head, Safety, Environment and Technology Department, Qingdao Port: "Now we can reduce traditional fuel consumption by approximately 25,000 liters and carbon dioxide emissions by about 67,000 tons annually." [Voice_over] Meanwhile in east China's Fujian Province, the Xiamen Port is utilizing a rail to sea intermodal transportation system to form a seamless link from land to coast. [Sound_bite] Ren Guoyan, head, Management Bureau, Xiamen Port: "By breaking down operational barriers for business coordination among various departments, we have united their efforts into one force to effectively lower the logistics costs and quicken the logistics response." [Voice_over] And in east China’s Zhejiang Province, the world’s busiest port by cargo throughput, the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, is planning to expand. Both the cities of Ningbo and Zhoushan are building a sustainable petrochemical industrial base, as well as a resource allocation hub for bulk commodities. China’s efforts to expand its ports are part of a drive to build up key marine cities including Shanghai, Shenzhen, Qingdao and others as outlined in China's 14th Five-Year Plan that ends this year.
