House collapses in canal after persistent rainfall
This is the dramatic moment a house collapsed into a river as persistent rainfall battered northern Thailand.
Footage shows the wooden home toppling into the Huai Nam Man river after floods eroded its foundation in Uttaradit province on Sunday.
Homeowner Ratree Ubonsuk said the family were watching TV in the living room when they heard loud cracking noises, prompting them to evacuate before their bedroom plunged into the water nearby. No one was reported injured.
Chatchai Ngokmai, chief executive of Nam Mun Subdistrict Administrative Organisation, sent personnel to recover the residents' belongings. However, the operation was suspended at 9 pm local time due to strong currents.
The local official said: 'The rescue crew used cables to secure the house and prevent it from being swept away by the water. We will bring in a backhoe tomorrow to help with recovery efforts.'
He added that flash floods struck other parts of the region earlier that morning.
The Thai Meteorological Department warned that a monsoon trough over northern and northeast Thailand, combined with a southwest monsoon over the south, could bring isolated heavy rains nationwide. Residents were urged to beware of flooding and flash floods, especially in foothills, near waterways, and low-lying areas.
In the Philippines, Typhoon Ragasa is bringing torrential weather as it moves north towards China. Officials have warned that Thailand will be affected later this week.
