Villagers fled their homes as heavy rain caused floods in eastern Thailand.

Dozens of residents were evacuated as relentless storms struck Trat province, causing a deluge that reached up to 150cm on Monday.

Footage shows rural homes empty as floods swamped a neighbourhood in Baan Thung Krabok village. Those who chose to stay had to use boats after roads were submerged.

Disgruntled locals lamented that they allegedly received little assistance from the local government, aside from emergency relief bags and drinking water.

They said they have been grappling with perennial flash floods for more than 40 years, and urged the authorities to erect infrastructure to alleviate the problem.

A resident said: 'Some years, the flooding is severe, while sometimes it's mild, depending on the rainfall. However, whenever there is a heavy downpour, water immediately overflows and inundates our homes. This year alone, we've already seen two floods: the first on July 11th and the latest, which has not yet receded.'

They called on authorities to expedite the completion of the Huai Sator Reservoir project, believing it will help mitigate the annual floods.

Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are in their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
