Salah Nassar, displaced from Jabalia Refugee Camp, said “Britain, Canada and Australia recognized us as a state today. This is a big victory for our cause. It makes us happy and supports the presence of Palestine for future generations.” Ghazi al-Khattab from Shujaiyya neighborhood said “Recognition of the Palestinian state is an overdue but important step. It is a legitimate right under all international agreements. We hope it marks the beginning of ending attacks on Gaza and achieving our dream of an independent state.” Umm Khalid Shanti from Shati Refugee Camp expressed doubts “For two years we have been suffering from this war. Our people have been destroyed. This decision will not change our reality. Arab countries do not stand with us, and Europe’s stance is symbolic.” On Sunday, the UK, Canada, Australia, and Portugal announced their recognition of Palestine, bringing the total number of UN member states that have taken this step to 153 out of 193. Eleven countries, including Malta, Luxembourg, France, Belgium, and Armenia, have also signaled plans to recognize the state of Palestine during the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, where world leaders will convene in New York on Monday for high-level discussions. Since Oct. 7, 2023, Israel has been carrying out a genocide in Gaza, killing more than 65,300 Palestinians, most of them women and children. The onslaught has displaced hundreds of thousands alongside a blockade on humanitarian aid that has led to famine and claimed the lives of at least 442 Palestinians, including 147 children.
