Gaza Strip: Countries urge permanent ceasefire in Gaza at UN General Assembly
Leaders from multiple United Nations (UN) member states delivered addresses at the general debate of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York on Wednesday, calling for a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, and urging advancement of the two-state solution to solve the Israeli-Palestinian crisis. In his address, Kenyan President William Ruto stated that Kenya is deeply concerned about the humanitarian disaster in Gaza and the immense destruction caused by Israeli military operations to the local civilians. He called for unconditional release of all detainees, a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, strict adherence to international humanitarian law, and advancement of the political process to realize the two-state solution. Spanish King Felipe VI, in his address, called on the Israeli government to halt the slaughter in the Gaza Strip. He stated that Israel's actions contradict the spirit represented by the UN, and the international community cannot remain silent in the face of so many civilian deaths. He also emphasized the urgency of implementing the two-state solution. Finnish President Alexander Stubb, in his speech, endorsed international efforts to promote the two-state solution. He emphasized that negotiations must fulfill the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and their legitimate aspiration to establish a sovereign independent state, stating that Israel has no right to violate international law and that the illegal occupation [by Israel of Palestinian territories] must end. He also pointed out that the international community must support the Palestinian National Authority in exercising effective jurisdiction over all Palestinian territories, including Gaza and the West Bank, stating this is the only feasible option for achieving the two-state solution. This unified call from the multiple leaders highlights the widespread concern of the international community regarding the severe situation in Gaza and the shared expectation for achieving lasting Israeli-Palestinian peace through the two-state solution.
