- ZAPORIZHZHIA, UKRAINE — RELEASED ON SEPT. 26, 2025 — RESTRICTION: USERS MUST CREDIT "STATE EMERGENCY SERVICE OF UKRAINE" HANDOUT, MUST NOT OBSCURE LOGO — EDITORIAL USE ONLY — Sappers removed an unexploded 500-kilogram guided bomb lodged more than five meters (approximately 16 feet) deep underground on the grounds of a private house in Zaporizhzhia, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine said on Friday, Sept. 26.

Police evacuated the residents and nearby neighbors before the ordnance was carefully extracted with an excavator and other specialized equipment. The bomb was then transported to a secure location for controlled destruction.

Russia started its "special military operation" on Feb. 24, 2022 and claimed that it is aimed at protecting people in the eastern region of Ukraine.

Since then, millions have been displaced, thousands have lost their homes, and hundreds of medical and educational institutions have been destroyed.
