VARIOUS OF HEZBOLLAH SUPPORTERS, SOME WEARING BLACK, SOME CARRYING PICTURES OF HASAN NASRALLAH AND HASHEM SAFIEDDINE BEIRUT, LEBANON - SEPTEMBER 27: Thousands of Hezbollah supporters gathered in southern Beirut on Saturday, Sept. 27, to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of the group's leader, Hassan Nasrallah.

Men, women, and children, many draped in black, marched through the streets of the capital towards Nasrallah's burial site.

The crowd carried large portraits of the slain leader and chanted pledges of loyalty to his successor, Naim Qassem, who addressed the attendees.

Nasrallah was killed on September 27, 2024, in a massive Israeli airstrike that targeted Beirut's southern suburbs. Days later, his initially designated successor, Hashem Safieddine, was also assassinated in a similar attack. Qassem took over leadership a month after Nasrallah's killing.

Among those present at Saturday's rally were survivors of last year's pager explosions, which injured scores of Hezbollah members. Israeli media has reported that Israel was behind the operation.

The assassination of Nasrallah occurred during a significant escalation of hostilities. A cycle of cross-border attacks between Hezbollah and Israel, which began in October 2023, intensified into a full-scale Israeli offensive by September 2024.

The conflict resulted in more than 4,000 deaths and approximately 17,000 injuries before a ceasefire was reached in November 2024.
