UK: Over 100 Protesters Risk Arrest Over Palestine Action Ban At Labour Conference
United Kingdom - September 28, 2025 Around 100 people gathered outside the Labour Party conference, silently holding signs reading: “I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action.” The peaceful sit-in highlights opposition to the government’s ban on the protest group, which has already led to the arrest of over 1,500 people since July 5, many of whom are elderly or have disabilities. Amnesty International is attending as observers and has issued an urgent appeal over the treatment of the protesters. The action challenges Labour’s refusal to debate any of the 30 motions on Palestine submitted by party members. Former Labour Leader Neil Kinnock criticized the ban, stating, “I want effective action against terrorists, not against protestors.” Polling reported by LabourList and the Telegraph shows over 70% of Labour members oppose the ban. The TUC unanimously passed a motion calling for the government to lift the Palestine Action ban. Lawyers and MPs have condemned the use of the Terrorism Act 2000 against domestic protest groups, calling it an “authoritarian attack of the right to protest.” Among the protesters are Keith Hackett, 71, a former Labour councillor, who said: “I'm risking arrest today… deeply ashamed of how Labour are acting… they need to recognise that direct action has been a fundamental part of the gains in the labour movement.” Actor and writer Tayo Aluko, 63, added: “This is a time for bravery… I feel I have no choice but to stand up and be counted.” The UN Commission of Inquiry recently found Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. Critics say the UK government has failed to meet its obligations under the Genocide Convention, while Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized the protection of free speech, even as mass arrests continue.
