Spain: Dead And Starving Dogs Found In La Sénia Investigation
La Sénia, Spain - September 29, 2025 Authorities uncovered a severe case of animal neglect after a routine inspection by the Guardia Civil’s SEPRONA unit on August 5 at a rural property in La Sénia. Officers discovered three large dogs dead and several others alive but extremely weak and malnourished. The animals were confined in disused agricultural trailers with no access to water, food, or veterinary care. None of the deceased dogs had collars or microchips, making identification impossible. Initial investigations suggest the dogs had been kept in these conditions for an extended period, causing suffering and death. Samples from the deceased are being analyzed through necropsy to determine the exact cause of death and whether the animals were used for hunting. The 39-year-old property owner is under investigation as the presumed responsible party and has provided a statement to the Guardia Civil. Case files have been sent to the Amposta Court and the Tarragona Provincial Environmental Prosecutor’s Office. As a precaution, SEPRONA requested the seizure of 14 dogs from the property. On September 22, a judicial order approved their temporary removal. The animals are now under the care of La Sénia’s municipal authorities, who have provided suitable housing and ongoing veterinary supervision to ensure their welfare. Officials have informed the court and the environmental prosecutor of the measures taken, confirming that the dogs are now safe and receiving proper care.
