(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) ACTIVIST BADR AL-TAMIMI, SAYING: "There was no reason to detain them — the children were just playing around their home. Their house is just a few meters away from the military checkpoint. They were simply playing. One of them is four years old — what can you expect from a child that age? He didn’t cross into a restricted area or enter any prohibited zone. The conversation among some soldiers was that these kids might be spying. I mean, imagine that — a small four-year-old child spying? On one hand, we have this innocence, and on the other hand, this area is completely quiet. There are no issues, no friction in this area. It’s one of the places in the old city known for its calm and stability. But what happened, in my view, crossed all red lines regarding human rights and children’s rights. Children, at such a young age, being subjected to this kind of pressure — I believe this is something that must be stopped." 16. VARIOUS OF ISRAELI FLAGS WAVING ON ROOF OF OLD BUILDING HEBRON, WEST BANK, PALESTINE - SEPTEMBER 30: Two Palestinian children, aged seven and five, were briefly detained by Israeli soldiers in the Old City of Hebron, an incident their family and local activists say has left the boys traumatized and afraid to play in their own neighborhood. According to accounts gathered by Anadolu, Abdel-Fattah al-Karkhi, 7, and his brother Mohammed, 5, were playing in the Ein al-Askar neighborhood near the Ibrahimi Mosque when an Israeli army force apprehended them on Monday evening, September 29. “I'm scared to go outside because the army might shoot me. I'm scared to go play near the municipality — I’m afraid they'll take me,” Abdel Fattah told Anadolu, describing the event with a mixture of innocence and fear. He added that Israeli forces later stormed their family home. The children were released after approximately half an hour following interventions by local residents and foreign activists, but the experience has had a lasting impact. His younger brother, Mohammed, echoed the sentiment, stating that he is afraid Israeli soldiers will arrest him. Local activist Badr al-Tamimi, a resident of the Ein al-Askar neighborhood, confirmed the details of the incident. He stated that the heavily armed soldiers detained the children on the pretext of "espionage," claiming the boys had been seen near a house recently taken over by a settler where restoration work was ongoing. "There was no reason to detain them — the children were just playing around their home. Their house is just a few meters away from the military checkpoint. They were simply playing. One of them is four years old — what can you expect from a child that age? " al-Tamimi questioned. "The occupation intended to leave a psychological impact on the children." He clarified that the children had been standing near the house while its door was open, an action the soldiers allegedly interpreted as spying. Al-Tamimi expressed astonishment at such a charge being leveled against children under the age of seven. The Old City of Hebron, including the Ibrahimi Mosque area, has been under increased restrictions on movement and frequent curfews since the war in Gaza began on October 7, 2023. According to official Palestinian data, since October 7, at least 1,048 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and approximately 10,300 have been injured. More than 19,000 have been arrested, including 400 children. Writing by Sibel Uygun
