A Gen Z protest in Morocco escalated as furious demonstrators set fires in the streets.

The movement, dubbed GenZ212 - with '212' referencing Morocco's international dialling code - was sparked by demands from young people for improved healthcare, better education, and action against widespread corruption.

Dramatic footage shows angry protesters surrounding a burning vehicle, while others were seen overturning another car during the commotion on October 2.

At least two young protesters were reportedly killed when police opened fire to prevent a crowd from storming a police station in Lqliaa, near the coastal city of Agadir.

The unrest erupted on Saturday amid public frustration over government spending on infrastructure for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, with critics arguing that funds should be directed toward essential services and addressing the economic crisis.

Officials confirmed that more than 1,000 individuals had been arrested, while around 354 were injured, the majority of them members of the security forces.

Authorities added that roughly 70 per cent of those involved were minors.

The protests are part of a wider pattern of youth-led demonstrations seen recently in Nepal, Indonesia and the Philippines, where participants have voiced concerns over economic hardship and governance.
