VARIOUS OF PEOPLE AT SQUARE HOLDING BANNERS, FLAGSISTANBUL, TÜRKİYE - OCT. 5, 2025: Thousands gathered in Istanbul’s historic Hagia Sophia Square on Sunday, Oct. 5, for a march organized by the Palestine Solidarity Platform to protest Israel’s actions in Gaza and to show support for the Freedom Flotilla missions. Under the banner “We Walk for Freedom,” demonstrators marched from the Hagia Sophia Square to the New Mosque Square in Eminonu district, chanting slogans such as “Israel out of Palestine,” “Palestine is not alone,” and “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.” The crowd carried Palestinian flags and banners demanding an end to the Gaza blockade, denouncing what they referred to as ongoing atrocities. The event concluded with speeches expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people and reaffirming support for ongoing humanitarian flotilla initiatives. Israeli naval forces intercepted and seized vessels of the Global Sumud Flotilla late Wednesday, detaining more than 470 activists from over 50 countries. Some of the activists who returned to their home countries in the past two days reported being mistreated during Israeli detention. They were denied clean food and water while in custody and subjected to psychological abuse throughout their detention period. The Global Sumud Flotilla aimed to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza and challenge Israel's blockade of the region, which faces severe famine conditions. Since October 2023, Israeli bombardments have killed more than 67,000 Palestinians in Gaza, primarily women and children. These attacks have made the enclave uninhabitable, while the ongoing blockade has further pushed the population toward famine.
