Fatah official warns of Israeli shifts after Gaza ceasefire, urges Palestinian unity
A senior official from the Palestinian National Liberation Movement (Fatah) warned Friday that Israel may exploit the newly brokered ceasefire with Hamas to shift its stance on the Gaza peace plan, calling the situation a continued threat to the Palestinian cause and urging national unity. Tawfiq Al-Tirawi, a member of the Central Committee of Fatah, one of Palestine's main political parties, said the situation remains dangerous and called for independent decisions that serve the homeland and the people's fundamental interests. "This situation is a danger to the Palestinian cause and people. To confront this threat, we must unite under a single, independent decision -- one that always serves the homeland and the people's fundamental interests. Hamas cannot be eliminated from Gaza; it is part of our national fabric. Its future effectiveness, however, will depend on the upcoming negotiations," said the senior Fatah official. The Israeli army confirmed that the ceasefire with Hamas took effect at noon on Friday. The military said its forces had redeployed along new lines "in accordance with the ceasefire and hostage-release agreement." Israel and Hamas reached the ceasefire deal on Thursday after three days of talks mediated by Egypt, Qatar, Türkiye, and the United States. The first phase of the plan includes Israeli troop withdrawals from Gaza City, Rafah, Khan Younis, and the north, the opening of five crossings for aid, and the release of hostages and prisoners. Under the agreement, Hamas will release all remaining hostages in exchange for the release of around 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. "The first phase will be conducted quietly. But once Israel is relieved of the public pressure over the hostages, I believe its position may change, and it may try to seize opportunities to alter its stances," said the Fatah official. Following the truce, about 200,000 Palestinians returned to northern Gaza, said Mahmud Bassal, spokesman for the Hamas-run Civil Defense Agency. He said displaced residents began moving north as Israeli forces pulled back from several areas, and that humanitarian teams were helping families and reopening main roads. Eyewitnesses reported heavy movement along Al-Rashid and Salah al-Din roads as thousands of people walked or drove toward their homes. A Hamas source said the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt is expected to reopen in the middle of next week to allow limited movement of people, though details on operations have not been announced. More than two years of Israeli military operations have devastated Gaza, killing over 67,000 people and triggering famine, according to Gaza health authorities.
