China: UN official lauds China's rapid progress on gender equality
United Nations (UN) Women's Asia-Pacific Regional Director Christine Arab has praised China's rapid progress on gender equality, calling its approach to women's comprehensive development a valuable model for other nations. Arab is in Beijing to attend the Global Leaders' Meeting on Women, which will be held in the capital from Oct 13 to 14. The meeting, co-hosted by China and UN Women, will gather heads of state, government leaders, parliamentary leaders, deputy prime ministers, ministerial officials, leaders of international organizations, and friendly personnel from various continents. In an exclusive interview with China Media Group (CMG) ahead of the meeting, the UN official highlighted China's advancements in gender equality, stressing the country's efficiency in transforming women's role in society. She lauded the Chinese government's strategic vision, adding that China's experience in promoting women's well-rounded development is worth learning from by other countries. Fifty-seven million job opportunities created for women. I think around 55 percent of entrepreneurs in the Internet in China are women entrepreneurs. We've seen important drops in maternal mortality, almost full gender parity in all levels of education between boys and girls. And we've seen enhanced legislation to promote women's access to a multitude of areas. It's incredibly important and what our data shows us, if you were to unlock the digital divide, for example, between women and men, you would release over a trillion dollars in GDP worldwide."; FILE: China - Exact Location, Date Unknown [SHOTS OVERLAYING SOUNDBITE] 4. China has a sense of reaching exactly where it wants to be. It's got a plan, it's working on that plan and it's moving forward. It's not complacent. We want to see that continue."; FILE: China - Exact Location, Date Unknown [SHOT OVERLAYING SOUNDBITE] 12. Various of Tianhe supercomputers, technicians working; [SHOT OVERLAYING SOUNDBITE] 13.
