China: Solo dining trend heats up in China
Storyline: Solo dining trend heats up in China [Voice_over] As the number of one-person households in China surpasses 125 million, the question of "how to eat well alone" is reshaping the country's catering industry. From fast-food chains to upscale establishments, businesses are optimizing everything from portion sizes to dining environments to cater to solo diners. At a ramen chain in south China's Shenzhen City, "one-person meal" sets, that typically include a main course, a drink, and a soup, are selling well. [Sound_bite] Diner: "The single set meal is very generous in portion, and its affordable. For a single office worker like me, it's quite convenient and fast." [Voice_over] Elsewhere in the city, to better accommodate this growing demographic, a barbeque restaurant features partitioned single seats, each fitted with a phone holder and call bell. The manager explained why the model is working. [Sound_bite] Wu Chuangzhen, manager, barbeque restaurant in Shenzhen: "Our original intention was to protect customers' privacy, allowing them to be more immersed in their food and avoid the awkwardness of sharing a table with strangers. We serve around 200 solo diners every week. During peak hours, from 6 to 8 in the evening, there's always a line. Usually about 10 to 20 tables waiting." [Voice_over] According to an industry report, China's "one-person meal" market exceeded 110 billion U.S. dollars last year and is expected to top 140 billion this year.
