Boy playing with yoga ball damages £8,600 treadmill and parent refuses to pay, blaming 'unattended gym'
On October 10, in a gym in Jiangsu Province, China, a young boy began playing by placing a yoga ball on a treadmill while his parent stood nearby, unaware of the potential danger and failing to intervene.
As a result, the yoga ball was pulled under the treadmill’s belt, damaging both the treadmill and the ball.
According to the gym, the treadmill was worth 80,000 yuan (about £8,600) and the yoga ball 1,200 yuan (£130). However, the parent has refused to pay compensation, claiming the gym was “unattended.”
Negotiations between both sides are still ongoing.
A lawyer commenting on the case stated that since the child is a minor with limited or no civil capacity, the parent, as the legal guardian, is liable for any damage caused. The argument that the gym lacked supervision does not exempt the parent from responsibility.
