China: Traditional manufacturers embrace smart innovation at Canton Fair
Storyline: A wave of cross-sector innovation led by traditional industries is drawing wide attention at the ongoing 138th China Import and Export Fair (Canton Fair). With 1 million new products on display, a number of well-established manufacturing enterprises which have moved beyond their core business, are showcasing their ventures into new fields with the help of intelligent technologies, bringing fresh vitality to China's real economy. "This is a portable phone translator. I just need to attach it to the back of a phone, and together with our app, it can do translation in various scenarios," said an exhibitor named Sun Xia. Crowds of buyers have gathered around the booth of the stationery company with a 30-year history. By moving from the stationery zone to the technology zone, the company's bold cross-industry move has generated an enthusiastic response. Since the opening of the fair, the company has been receiving inquiries from hundreds of buyers every day. Its confidence for the transformation lies in it finding a precise application for AI. The company's newly developed product, capable of real-time translation in 138 languages, has become a highlight of the exhibition. "Using this device takes like one second to translate whatever I want. And I tried it for like three or four times, that's perfect, like zero mistakes. I really like it," a purchaser from Jordan said. Meanwhile, a traditional home appliance manufacturer that has made its debut in the field of intelligent robotics is also tapping into new ground. At its booth, a futuristic robotic arm was seen deftly preparing coffee. Behind this smart device lies much more than a coffee machine - it is part of a fully customizable unmanned beverage station. "This is our newly launched unmanned coffee machine. It can customize drinks based on customers' preferences. Today it's an unmanned coffee maker, but tomorrow, depending on client customization, it could become an unmanned milk tea station or produce other commercial beverage products," said the exhibitor named Mai Chuqi. Through its self-developed software platform, the company has integrated three decades of manufacturing expertise with smart technology. This has not only achieved a breakthrough in functionality but also cut production costs by more than 20 percent. The exhibitor said the machine symbolizes the company's transformation from a traditional home appliance manufacturer to a pioneer exploring an entirely new track and field.
