The city, famed for its Turkic-Islamic architectural masterpieces, welcomed delegates from around the world for discussions on education, science, and culture.

Scheduled to run from Oct. 30 to Nov. 13, this year’s session marks the first time the conference is being held in Central Asia — and the first outside UNESCO’s Paris headquarters in 40 years.

The General Conference, UNESCO’s main governing body comprising 194 member states, convenes every two years to define the organization’s vision and general policy. Each member state has one vote, regardless of its size or financial contribution.
