Global Panda Partners 2024 (GPP), an academic, open and international platform for dialogue and exchange aimed at building consensus and jointly planning the construction of a global ecological civilization, opened on Tuesday in Chengdu, the capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province.

Themed "Harmonious Coexistence Between Man and Nature," the conference brings together government agencies, professionals and the general public as panda partners, drawing more than 380 attendees from more than 30 countries and regions.

At Tuesday's event, former UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova expressed appreciation for China's commitment to advancing ecological civilization.

SOUNDBITE (English): IRINA BOKOVA, Former UNESCO Director-General
"UNESCO has been working and continues to work well with China in order to protect the pandas, because I believe that it is one of those extraordinary examples of an endangered species.
I think, first and foremost, it should start with the recognition that when it comes to environmental protection, endangered species or climate, there are no political borders because it doesn't recognize political borders.
There are plenty of international organizations and of course the United Nations, like the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) or the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) that are working in a very non-political, in a very kind of commitment and with integrity to work on that. And I know the Chinese (are) cooperating with these organizations very very strongly."
