PROTESTERS HOLDING FLARES AND HONKING VEHICLES RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - OCTOBER 31: Hundreds of protesters, mainly residents of the Penha and Alemao complexes in northern Rio de Janeiro, took to the streets on Friday, Oct. 31, to denounce the deaths caused by a large-scale police operation that has reportedly claimed over 100 lives since it began on Tuesday.

Residents joined activists in the demonstration, starting from Campo da Ordem in the Penha Complex. Motorcyclists dressed in white rode through the streets as part of the protest.

The operation in two impoverished favelas represents one of the largest police deployments in Rio de Janeiro's recent history, targeting the territorial expansion of the Comando Vermelho criminal group.

The death toll has been disputed. The Public Defender's Office puts the figure at 132, while the regional government confirms 119. Four police officers were killed, but authorities believe the remaining fatalities were members of armed gangs who resisted arrest.
