UNCAPTIONED: California Attorney General Rob Bonta Endorses Scott Wiener to Succeed Pelosi
California Attorney General Rob Bonta Endorses Scott Wiener to Succeed Pelosi. California Attorney General Rob Bonta has endorsed state senator Scott Wiener to succeed Nancy Pelosi as San Francisco’s representative in the U.S. House. “He takes on big, tough issues. He’s very thoughtful,” Bonta told POLITICO, adding that Wiener “will be an incredible congressperson.” The endorsement came shortly after Pelosi announced she will not seek another term, triggering a rare and competitive race for her long-held seat. Bonta, a former state assemblymember from Oakland, previously served with Wiener in the California Legislature, collaborating on housing and climate policy. Wiener, a well-known figure in state politics, launched his campaign last month, saying he would run regardless of Pelosi’s plans. His early preparations — fundraising and gathering endorsements — had long fueled speculation about Pelosi’s eventual retirement. While backing Wiener, Bonta praised Pelosi as “irreplaceable,” calling her “an icon” and “perhaps the greatest speaker in U.S. history.” Pelosi’s departure marks the end of an era for San Francisco Democrats and opens one of the most influential seats in Congress to a new generation.
