US: Lava Spectacularly Flows from Volcano at Dusk
United States - November 07, 2025 Lava was captured flowing from Kilauea's crater, visible live on USGS cams. The volcano, one of the world's most active, is anticipated to enter a "high fountaining phase" between November 7 and November 11. Kilauea has been erupting since December 2024. Kīlauea exhibited signs on Tuesday night that episode 36 of its ongoing eruption might soon occur, and these signs persisted into Friday. Lava overflows from Kīlauea's north vent resumed around 3:30 a.m. Friday morning, approximately 24 hours after the last overflow, as reported by the U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. Current lava overflows are characterized by limited spattering, suggesting mostly degassed magma. Gas plumes continue to emanate from both vents, with sulfur dioxide emissions remaining steady at background levels of 1,200 to 1,500 tonnes per day. If high fountains develop, variable winds could direct gases toward nearby communities. High levels of volcanic gases, primarily water vapor, carbon dioxide, and sulfur dioxide, pose significant concerns due to their potential widespread effects downwind. As sulfur dioxide is continuously released from the summit during an eruption, it reacts in the atmosphere to form vog (volcanic smog) downwind of Kīlauea. The previous eruption phase, episode 35, took place on October 17–18 and featured lava fountains reaching up to 1,500 feet high, covering two-thirds of Halemaʻumaʻu crater. The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory is closely monitoring Kīlauea's activity.
