Officials, religious leaders, and citizens visited Arafat’s mausoleum in Ramallah, West Bank, to lay wreaths.

In addition, Palestinians gathered in Ramallah held a march through the city square, carrying Palestinian flags and images of Yasser Arafat.

Palestinian President Yasser Arafat played a major part in the Palestinian movement that aims to build an independent Arab state on Palestinian lands.

Arafat founded the Fatah movement on Jan. 1, 1965, taking over the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) in 1969. The PLO had been created by the Arab League five years earlier to declare Palestinian independence.

On Nov. 11, 2004, after effectively being confined to his compound in Ramallah for more than two years by the Israeli army, Arafat fell into a coma and died at the age of 75.

Palestinians blame Israel for killing Arafat by poisoning him. The cause of his death has been a subject of speculation ever since.
