UNCAPTIONED: US Senate Passes Bill to End Government Shutdown, Sends to House
US Senate Passes Bill to End Government Shutdown, Sends to House. The U.S. Senate voted 60-40 on Monday to approve a deal ending the nation’s longest-ever government shutdown, which had halted pay for federal workers and disrupted key services. Nearly all Republicans and eight Democrats backed the compromise, which restores funding for federal agencies and prevents layoffs until January 30. The bill now heads to the House of Representatives, where Speaker Mike Johnson said he hopes to pass it by Wednesday and send it to President Donald Trump for signature. Trump called the agreement “very good,” saying it will stabilize government operations after weeks of political gridlock. The funding extension runs through January 30 and keeps the U.S. on track to add about $1.8 trillion annually to its $38 trillion national debt. Democrats expressed frustration that the deal does not guarantee continued health insurance subsidies for 24 million Americans, though a vote on the issue is scheduled for December. The agreement also fully funds the SNAP food assistance program through next September, avoiding further disruptions for millions of low-income families.
