Atlanta, United States - November 12, 2025 Video recorded by Nelson Quiñones shows the Northern Lights glowing above the city on the night of November 12, 2025. The unusual display occurred because of a massive geomagnetic storm triggered by a powerful solar flare and a coronal mass ejection that sent charged particles racing toward Earth at speeds reaching 4 million mph. The Space Weather Prediction Center issued a G4 (Severe) geomagnetic storm watch, allowing the auroras to reach far farther south than normal, including parts of north Georgia and metro Atlanta. Faint streaks and shifting waves of color appeared in the sky, mostly visible through phone cameras using night mode and long-exposure settings rather than directly with the naked eye. This sighting was part of a larger event in which the Northern Lights were also visible across much of the Kansas City metro and other areas of the United States due to the same geomagnetic storm.
