Storyline: The 15th National Games of China recently concluded its first-ever mass participation competition for model aircraft, with Hong Kong sending a delegation to compete in the drone events, highlighting the region's growing focus on drone technology. The Hong Kong China Drone Sports Association (HKDSA) selected 20 athletes to participate in this competition, aiming to promote development of the drone industry in Hong Kong through talent cultivation and industrial cooperation. Andy Chau Wai-kit, chairman of the HKDSA, explained how the new sporting events are changing perceptions and fostering regional collaboration. "Drone sports are divided into two categories: the first is drone soccer, and the second is a virtual drone racing competition. Through these competitions, people realize that drones can by used for sports and thus greatly enhance interactions within the Greater Bay Area," said Chau. Beyond the competition, drones played a crucial role in the security operations for the Games. The Hong Kong Police Force established a dedicated drone unit, deploying over 600 drones of various types. These units conducted pre-event surveys and risk assessments of venues and their surroundings, as well as high-altitude patrols during and after the competitions. The versatile application of drones at the National Games, from competitive sports to security patrols, is seen as a major catalyst for the future of Hong Kong's drone technology and its role in the burgeoning low-altitude economy. "The National Games serve as an important scenario, demonstrating that drones can be used for various purposes, not only in sports but also in police work, as well as significantly benefiting our daily lives. From the perspective of the low-altitude economy, it is an excellent opportunity to drive development," said Chau. The Games is taking place across Guangdong Province, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and the Macao Special Administrative Region from Nov 9 to 21, marking the first time that three Chinese regions are co-hosting the country's highest-level and largest national multi-sport event.
