Infamous 'Euston Puddle' which has been soaking people for years returns
A huge puddle that has soaked passing commuters and tourists for at least four years is back with a vengeance after works to stop it failed.
Transport for London (TfL) tried to drain the infamous Euston Puddle, which stretches for several metres opposite busy Euston Station, last winter.
But following recent downpours, the puddle has returned again to cause havoc next to one of the UK's busiest train stations.
Photos and videos show men picking up their partners to wade through the water.
And back in 2021, an elderly woman had to be rescued by passing students after her mobility scooter cut out in the depths of the puddle.
The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) are among many groups calling for a lasting resolution to the flood, which they say hampers blind and partially sighted people from safely crossing the busy Euston Road and reaching Moorfields Eye Hospital.
TfL apologised for the disruption to travellers and said they were looking to solve the problem along with Thames Water.
Some locals have said the puddle, which has reappeared following heavy rainfall at least as far back as 2021, should be given its own Blue Plaque to commemorate its fame.
Commuters passing the puddle on Upper Woburn Place are often faced with the decision of either missing their train or braving the waves produced by passing buses, cars and taxis.
Euston Station is the UK's tenth busiest train station, with more than 36 million passengers passing through the terminal each year.
Clay Nash, Area Campaigns Officer for the RNIB, said: "As part our campaign to push for accessible streets for all blind and partially sighted people, we are concerned that high levels of flooding across Euston Road are affecting people's ability to walk safely and independently in Camden."
"The flood water regularly blocks access to vital signal-controlled pedestrian crossings that allow blind and partially sighted people to safely cross the busy Euston Road and reach Moorfields Eye Hospital, as well as posing a possible danger for travellers exiting Euston Station and making their way to RNIB headquarters on Pentonville Road. "
"It also hampers access to the area around University College London and the British Museum."
"Without properly drained and maintained roads, inclusive design features for disabled people such as dropped kerbs, tactile paving and signal-controlled crossings become physically inaccessible, making the whole area a no-go zone. "
"In the case of Euston Road, poor drainage infrastructure is cutting off access to an important and useful route."
"We urge the relevant authorities to act immediately to resolve the root cause of the flooding, so that blind and partially sighted people can walk in Camden whatever the weather."
TfL said they would be working with Thames Water to finally get rid of the Euston Puddle once and for all.
"We're sorry for the disruption caused by recent flooding on Upper Woburn Place opposite Euston Station," a spokesperson said. "
"We made changes to the drains here last winter that we believed had resolved the problem, but now it has reoccurred, we will investigate the new drainage system, working with Thames Water. "
"In the meantime, we will work closely with our maintenance teams so they can attend when heavy rain is forecast to clear any significant puddles."
