US, Los Angeles: Topanga Canyon Closed During Storm
Los Angeles, United States - November 14, 2025 11/14/2025 12:00 am GMT-0800 TOPANGA, Calif. – Caltrans District 7 has announced the early closure of a 3.6-mile stretch of Topanga Canyon Boulevard/State Route 27 (SR-27) between Pacific Coast Highway and Grand View Drive at 10 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13. This decision comes in preparation for heavy rainstorms predicted to begin overnight and continue through the weekend. Crews will closely monitor and reassess road conditions throughout Friday and the weekend. Motorists should anticipate that the route will remain closed during Friday morning's commute and potentially through the weekend. The National Weather Service is forecasting the heaviest rainfall overnight Thursday into early Friday morning and again overnight Friday into Saturday. Rainfall is expected to continue through Sunday afternoon, with peak rates of 0.25 to 0.7 inches per hour and total storm amounts ranging from 2 to 4 inches. Caltrans made the closure decision due to expected rainfall totals exceeding the threshold for potential debris flow, which is 0.25 inches of rain per hour in this region. There are hazards for both crews and motorists, prompting travelers to plan for alternate routes and to avoid driving in rainstorms, particularly in burn-scar areas. Caltrans advises drivers to expect delays, exercise caution, and always turn on their headlights in rainy conditions. In preparation for the storm, crews are moving equipment, placing k-rail and sandbags, and stabilizing current retaining walls as part of ongoing projects on SR-27 and Pacific Coast Highway recovery efforts following the Palisades Fire. Due to potentially rapidly changing conditions, Caltrans District 7 will provide daily updates via news release and on its social media pages, including X.
