UK Plans Sweeping Immigration Reforms to Speed Deportations. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will unveil major reforms aimed at tightening deportation rules and reducing the UK’s “pull factors” for migrants. The Home Office calls the proposals the most far-reaching anti-illegal migration measures in modern times. Mahmood argues the UK’s “excessive generosity” and complex legal barriers have made removals extremely difficult. Many reforms are expected to mirror Denmark’s model, where 95% of failed asylum seekers are deported. Changes under consideration include tightening human rights laws and curbing legal claims that delay deportations. Modern slavery rules will be overhauled so migrants must declare victim status upon arrival, preventing late claims. More offences will qualify foreign offenders for automatic removal, and judges will be directed to prioritise public safety. The Home Office says 48,560 people have already been removed since Labour took office, despite rising small-boat crossings.
