Fifteen tourists who allegedly ran a cryptocurrency scam were arrested in a police raid in Thailand.

The suspects reportedly duped victims into fraudulent crypto investments as they operated the transnational cyberscam from a warehouse in Bangkok.

The Metropolitan Police Bureau stormed the building on Soi Nuan Chan 36-38 following noise complaints and reports about a constant stream of foreigners entering.

They initially found two foreigners outside and asked to search the building, but the pair were unable to communicate properly. The warehouse owner later arrived and allowed officers inside.

Upon entering, police found a large and windowless room. There was another door with a sliding peephole, through which they saw the suspects allegedly trying to flee through a back exit.

Authorities detained nine Azerbaijanis, five Georgians, and one Ukrainian on the premises. They also seized 21 HP laptops, four Acer laptops, two routers, 16 mobile phones, 15 sets of headphones with chargers, and five scripts used for scamming.

Officials said the gang ran a website luring victims to trade fake digital and cryptocurrency currencies.

Police Major General Kiattikul Sonthinen, commander of Metropolitan Police Division 2, said: ‘We charged them with being members of a secret society, involved in a transnational criminal organisation, and being foreigners working without permission.'

‘We handed them over to the inquiry officer of Khok Khram Police Station for further legal action.'

Thailand has been ramping up its crackdown on international scam operations, targetting call centres, crypto fraud groups, and online romance scams in the country.

Many of the scam centres are foreign-run and use warehouses, rented houses, and makeshift offices as offices.

However, Thailand's proximity to the 'Golden Triangle' - a hub for organised crime and cross-border trafficking - has hampered efforts.
