Displaced from eastern Khan Younis, many have moved toward the coastal Mawasi area after a cold spell and heavy rains left them in dire conditions.
Declaring, “If we are to die, let us die with honor,” many sought refuge in buildings near the “yellow line,” the zone from which Israeli forces had withdrawn, despite the clear dangers.
The structures—severely damaged by Israeli strikes and lacking basic necessities—are seen by residents as “the lesser of two evils.”
Families sheltering in a largely destroyed UNRWA school near the line try to survive with limited support. They grow cowpeas, arugula, and eggplants in the schoolyard, and bake bread in clay ovens they built themselves.
Yet access to clean water requires walking several kilometers outside the compound under the sound of gunfire.
Israeli forces routinely shoot at Palestinians who approach, even without crossing, the “yellow line” in areas where movement is permitted.
Israel has killed 280 Palestinians and wounded 672 since Oct. 11, according to a Wednesday statement by Gaza’s Health Ministry.
Since October 2023, the Israeli army has killed nearly 70,000 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, injured over 170,000, and reduced most of the enclave to rubble.
