The downpour has turned the sandy ground into pools of water, leaving makeshift shelters soaked and unstable as the storm intensifies.

Witnesses told Anadolu Agency that powerful gusts ripped through the camp, tearing or uprooting several tents, while waves driven in from the sea dragged away clothing and personal belongings.

They said many children were asleep inside the tents when the water rushed in, heightening fears of injuries, hypothermia, and other life-threatening risks.

Families already uprooted by months of fighting said they are struggling to find anywhere safer to go, as the harsh weather deepens an already dire humanitarian situation. With limited shelter options and temperatures dropping at night, residents described conditions that make it difficult to protect children and sick relatives from cold and exposure.

Muhammad Abu Jamii, who lives in one of the seaside tents, said their clothes and food were left floating in water, asking where they could possibly move. “You wake up and suddenly your tent is flooded,” he said, adding that the situation has become unbearable.

Another displaced mother, Faten al-Bayouk, said she has five children and a husband who is ill and wounded, warning that the tent is collapsing onto them as the cold bites.

Camp resident Jawad Ismail said he once lived in a four-story building but now spends sleepless nights meters from the sea, while Abdurrahman Mashayikh appealed for evacuation to a safer location, saying the families do not want anything except to be moved away from the shoreline.

Gaza has been affected since Saturday by a polar low-pressure system – the third of the winter season – bringing heavy rain and strong winds.

Gaza has been struggling to survive harsh weather in recent months, as two previous weather depressions caused the deaths of 17 Palestinians, including four children, due to the collapse of already damaged buildings in Israeli bombardment and the flooding and uprooting of tens of thousands of displacement tents.

Weather conditions pose great danger to displaced Palestinians who are living in worn-out tents or severely damaged high-risk buildings, which have been under repeated Israeli strikes since October 2023.

The Israeli army has killed more than 71,200 people, mostly women and children, and injured over 171,200 others since October 2023 in Gaza in a brutal assault that also left the enclave in ruins.
